How to Breathe When You Work Out

When you work out, you’re probably thinking about how much you can lift, how long you can keep going, and whether your form is right. Breathing usually doesn’t make the list. It probably should, because the way you breathe can affect your stamina, your focus, and how well the whole workout goes.
Here are three things to try.
- Belly breathing. This is also called diaphragmatic breathing. Instead of breathing up into your chest, breathe down into your belly so it rises. You take in more air that way, which can help you last longer and feel less worn out.
- Breathing in rhythm. Match your breath to your movement. For example, breathe in as you lift a weight and breathe out as you lower it. It gives your mind something to hang onto, and it helps you stay in control.
- Holding your breath. Take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, then let it out. If you practice this over time, it can help build up your lung capacity and your stamina.
Try to breathe slowly and on purpose all the way through your workout. Play around with these and see which ones suit you. It takes a little practice before it feels natural, and that’s fine.
